We are proud to announce that the Boat & Beach Wise Trust, in association with Moore Wilson’s, have launched a boat scholarship programme for Worser Bay Boating Club. The club and the trust together will be fundraising to establish a fleet of six optimists and six starlings that will be made available to promising young sailors who would not be able to continue on without support at two critical points in their sailing journey. And Moore Wilson's have got right in behnd the project providing a grant to kick start the programme and enable the first boats to be purchased.
The six optimists will be race ready and will be available to six young people transitioning out of optisquad and making their first steps into blue fleet and green fleet racing. The six starlings will be quality racing boats and will be available to six young people taking their first steps into the youth classes. Both sets of boats will also be used in the club’s team-racing (optimist) and match-racing (starling) programmes.
Sailors will have access to the boats for up to 12 months culminating in participation at the optimist and starling nationals. Our target is to kick start the programme with 3 starlings and 3 optimists during the 2024-2025 season and to complete the establishment of the fleets with another 3 starlings and 3 optimists in the 2025-2026 season. The Boat & Beach Wise Trust will lead the fund raising drive to build on the seed funding provided by Moore Wilson’s. This year's Boat Shed Chat on Friday 6 December will be raising funds for the boat scholarship programme.
Meanwhile, we welcome "Spider Pig", the first Optimist in our boat scholarship fleet, so watch out for her in the bay on a race day soon.
